BRIDGE OF ALLEN & DUNBLANE The dining room at the Westlands was packed for the Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane’s annual Burn’s Supper, including guests Jim McGhie, Jamie Daniels and John McDowal and our guest piper Bob Dunn.
President Tony got the proceedings underway and wished Past President and founder member Iain Davidson a happy 80th birthday for yesterday.
Eve was piped in with the haggis which was addressed by Lawrie Orr who brought some humour to the address particularly as he exchanged his wee dirk for a beastie of a dirk to burst open the haggis. All in all an amusing and fearful address. |

BRIDGE OF ALLEN & DUNBLANE
An exciting nights curling was enjoyed at Stirling Rink in January.
The match was the annual Charlie Proctor Broom, held for 33 years now as a Club competition to win the broom left by Charlie Procter, a Canadian Curler, who stayed with the Club during a Canadian Rotary Curling Team tour of Scotland in 1974.
The teams were declared: Alec Campbell (skip), Derek Young, Paul Anderson and George Morrison versus Graham Russell (skip), Jim Gardner(skip from 2007), George Morrison and Rod Jones.
The first end saw Graham’s team off to a great start, then the tactics came into play from Alec’s team, who had advised George on the choice of curling shoes resulting in several serious slips to the ice.
Some shame was felt and Tony and Paul brushed a winning end for Graham's team as Rod and George were off the ice trying to fix the shoes.
The ice took no prisoners on the night and Alec’s team won by a narrow margin. |
Carse of Stirling have again been pounding the streets taking Santa to the children for 7 evenings and they are well on their way to collecting the £6000 that was also raised last year. This money is gifted to a variety of Childrens causes before Christmas so that the money can do good before the year end. Each night our Santa is accompanied by over 20 "little helpers" and over the years has become an expected part of Stirling's Xmas scene |

The weather was generally dry for the annual Bridge of Allan pre Christmas street party, this brought out good crowds that were cheered on their way with free sweeties and chocolate pennies, a free raffle, the Alloa Bomar Pipe Band and the Dunblane fire engine in the background as Rotarians encouraged donations towards the Bridge of Allan War Memorial. As always the public were most generous helping the Club along the way to their contribution of £1000. |

On Tuesday 27th November The Rotary Club of Crieff held its Ninth Young Musician of the Year Competition. The Competition is held every other year and was started in 1991 by former club member, David Washington who has since recently moved away from the area. Happily, David was able to attend this year’s Competition to see his legacy continue from strength to strength...
The Music Competition was held at Morrison’s Academy who kindly made available a couple of their rooms for the competitors to perform in. Open to pupils from all schools in the Crieff catchment area, some 77 students were entered. Unfortunately a few had to call off due to illness and clashes with exams. The competitors’ performances were judged by Mr. Neil Metcalf, Director of Music, Strathallan School and Mrs. Angie Dagpunar, a professional musician from Perth
After a full day of music-making - there being so many entrants the morning sessions had to be judged in two separate venues - all prize winners and their accompanists were entertained for dinner at the Rotary Club meeting where they had to “play for their supper”.

ALLOA ROTARY
The River Forth as calm as a mill-pond, a Jazz Quartet, Soup, Sandwiches and Stovies for lunch, and 76 Alloa Rotarians and friends were all the required ingredients for a most enjoyable cruise aboard the Maid of the Forth.. The ship left Alloa Docks at 1.30pm on Sunday 25th November 2007 and sailed downstream to view progress on the Upper Forth Crossing at Kincardine.
The Maid of the Forth then turned and meandered upstream as far as the new Stirling bypass bridge before returning to Alloa Docks at 4.30pm. It was an unusual and happy experience, especially for the new Rotarians.
The picture shows the calm waters of the Forth, with the new Alloa Academy taking shape in the background.

The Perth Silent Auction organised by the Rotary Club of Perth ended Saturday 3rd November at 16:00. It has been a huge success. The lots were advertised in the Perthshire Advertiser, on the web, and we had a stand Friday and Saturday in the St John's Centre Perth.
The auction was made up of 183 lots from cars to meals to hotels to gourmet breaks to a bogey of dung. A huge range of items at all price levels. Some items attracted some heavy bidding - notably, the trip on the Waverly paddle steamer - nostalgia is not yet dead.
The stand was manned by members of the club whilst other members manned PCs to handle email bids and maintain the web page. However, the success of this rather took us by surprise and we had particularly heavy bidding on the last 3 days of the auction. Approximately 400 email bids were received, a large number of telephone bids and over 100 bids made at the stand in the centre. In the last hour, we were inundated with emails and bids at the centre. So much so, it was impossible to keep the web page up to date. This was a situation which took us all by surprise - however, a very welcome surprise.
All of this activity meant we were unable to load the finalised bid board until the Sunday. Once we had the final picture, we discovered we had made a £15,643 for our MacMillan charity. Indeed, this figure may go up as some people have expressed their wish to donate to the cause and we have some monies to add from our collecting boxes. The figure is purely from bids from the public.
The last time we ran a Silent Auction, it was held in a hall and we raised in the order of £3,000. The publicity we received from the Perthshire Advertiser and our web presence has obvious had an amazing effect boosting our return by a magnitude of 5 times.
A lot of work from members of the Rotary Club of Perth, but, a worthwhile result for a worthwhile cause.

District 1010 Rotarians put their best feet forward for WaterAid
Ten Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dundee, with support from other local
Rotarians, put their best feet forward on Saturday 9th June as part of
WaterAid's Munro Challenge to put teams on the top of all 284 Munros, and
the 18 mountains over 3,000 feet in England, Ireland and Wales. In the
process, they raised over £6,600 in sponsorship.
The group, who were accompanied by 30 Rotarians from other clubs in the
District, including members from the Rotary Clubs of Camperdown and
Monifieth, and Rotarians travelling further afield from Burntisland,
Pitlochry, Dunfermline, and Aberdeen, met at Glenshee, and took
responsibility for seven of the Munros in the area. The organiser, Tim
Heilbronn, Chairman of the International Services Commitee at the Dundee
Rotary Club, expressed his delight at the amount of sponsorship raised,
"When I initially mentioned to fellow club members that we could perhaps put
a team together, and try to raise £1,000 for WaterAid, I never expected the
level of support that we received not just from Dundee Rotary members, but
all the other Rotarians from other clubs who asked if they could join us.
The support of our sponsors has been tremendous. With the addition of Gift
Aid, WaterAid will be benefiting by about £8,500 from our small group alone.
If this level of support has been achieved by all the other groups taking
part in the Challenge across the country, then the impact of the work that
WaterAid is doing to try to bring water to the 1 billion people who currently do not have access to clean water will be considerable.
"We could not have asked for better weather, companionship, or a cause for
us to support, and we are already looking forward to supporting WaterAid's
next Munro Challenge in 2009." |

Duck Race 2007
The 2007 Duck Race organised by the Rotary Club of Bridge of Allan and Dunblane had a fine day with good support from the local crowd. The day had started as usual with a coffee morning in the cathedral halls supported by the Alloa Bowmore pipe band and dancers. A plant sale and other stalls saw brisk sales on the day.
The just before one o’clock the band piped down the Allan Water to the Faery Bridge for the start of the race. This year organiser Glen Montgomery had worked hard with his committee to raise sponsorship and prizes from local businesses and fellow Rotarians had helped check and number the ducks. Glen had arranged for Tricia Fitzsimons, the general manager of Dunblane Hydro to start the race with the usual fog horn, upon which Rotarians released 4000 yellow racing ducks into the waters.
The waters were running well but some ducks were more interested in feeding than racing and Rotarians had to walk the river to encourage the ducks to the finish. The winning duck prize was a home cinema and the many other prizes have been delivered to the lucky winners.
President Paul Anderson thanked all the local businesses for their support and the local community members who regularly sponsor a duck. The main charities supported by the race are CHAS and Childline who will benefit from a combined contribution of over £3,000. |
